SEC Alstom (Wuhan) Transformers Co., Ltd., a joint venture of Alstom Grid and Shanghai Electric Group (SEC), has won a 2011 National Investment Projects Excellence Award from the Investment Association of China. The award recognises the successful realisation of the SEC Alstom Wuhan Transformers (SAWT) “green” transformer plant – a world first.

SAWT is one of the most advanced Ultra High Voltage transformer manufacturing sites in China, able to design, manufacture and test Ultra High Voltage Alternating Current (UHVAC) transformers up to 1200 kV and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transformers up to 1100kV.

From its conception, SAWT set out to be a reference in environmentally conscious factory design and management, underscoring Alstom Grid’s continued commitment to sustainable development. In November 2009, SAWT received a Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certificate from the United States Green Building Council. SAWT’s green initiatives include the use of environmental friendly materials for office and factory construction; solar energy for exterior lighting and recycled waste steam for heating. No boiler or diesel generators assure low carbon emissions while a rainwater collection system saves water.

The Investment Association of China (IAC) honours projects that show excellence in advanced technology and innovation, but also safety. Alstom Grid is one of 38 projects to be recognised by IAC in 2011. Others include the Three Gorges Dam project, Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway and Pudong Airport Expansion.
