Biggest supplier of trains and onboard ERTMS equipment in Norway

Alstom is the biggest supplier of trains in Norway with roots going back 100 years. Approximately 1/3 of Norway’s total fleet of passenger trains (approx. 250 trains) are produced by Alstom. The enrolment of Alstom’s onboard ERTMS system on approximately 380 trains by 2026 will contribute to making the Norwegian railway network more efficient and reliable, reducing delays for passengers and freight services, while guaranteeing the highest levels of safety.

  • Crack repair for Norske tog – WLAB2

    In 2018, Alstom won an order to repair cracks and corrosion in the aluminum carbody on 20 WLAB2 sleeping coaches, which were built in 1986 – 1987. The project was executed in Motala for our customer Norske tog, and received great customer satisfaction.

    Alstom has signed a framework contract with Norske Tog (NT) for the provision of up to 200 Coradia Nordic regional trains. Valued at over €1.8 billion, the contract constitutes the largest rail procurement in Norway’s history. The first firm order of 30 trains was worth €380 million. A subsequent option call-off of 25 additional trains will introduce a version capable of 200 kph speed.Alstom holds several Parts & Service projects related to legacy signalling systems for mainline railway, subway and tramways

    Alstom has been awarded a contract by Bane NOR, the Norwegian railway authority, to equip the entire Norwegian railway fleet with ERTMS on-board train control solution and to maintain the system for up to 25 years. Project to be completed by 2026.

    Mid-life upgrade of Type 72

    Alstom has signed a contract with Norske Tog worth around 70 million euro for a mid-life upgrade of 36 Type 72 train sets delivered by Italian manufacturer AnsaldoBreda in the period 2002-2006. Project to be completed between 2023 – 2025.

Since the 1870’s, Alstom, including Strømmens Værksted, have introduced innovative mobility solutions to the Norwegian railway.   • 2020s

    In 2022, Alstom wins landmark contract to deliver up to 200 regional trains in Norway. Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed a framework contract with Norske tog (NT) allowing for the provision of up to 200 Coradia Nordic regional trains. Valued at over €1.8 billion, the contract constitutes the most significant rail procurement in Norway’s history. The first firm order of 30 trains is worth €380 million.

  • 2010s

    In 2018, Alstom was awarded a contract by Bane NOR, the Norwegian railway authority, to equip the entire Norwegian railway fleet with ERTMS on-board train control solution and to maintain the system for up to 25 years. The installation of the equipment aboard the rolling stock will be completed by 2026. As part of the country’s national ERTMS (European Rail Traffic Management System) roll-out, the new on-board system will contribute to making the Norwegian railway network more efficient and reliable, reducing delays for passengers and freight services, while guaranteeing the highest levels of safety.

  • 2000s

    In 2001, Bombardier Transportation acquires ADtranz (ABB Daimler-Benz Transportation). Strømmens Værksted, which became a subsidiary of ADtranz in 1999 now becomes part of Bombardier and renamed Bombardier Transportation Norway. The company is mainly occupied with maintenance and modernising of rolling stock for NSB. The new Norwegian Royal Train is one of the last cars built at Strømmens Værksted.

  • 1990s

    In 1996, the first delivery of Lok EL 18 took place. A total of 20 trains were delivered between 1996-1997. The electric locomotive can be used for both passenger and freight trains. The locomotives are produced by ADtranz and SLM in Switzerland. The locomotives operate day and night and are in use on Dovrebanen, Bergensbanen, Sørlandsbanen and Flåmsbanen. The Lok EL 18 is equipped with magnetic track brake.

  • 1980s

    In 1980, the delivery of five Lok DI 4s took place. This is a diesel-electric locomotive which can be used for both passenger and freight transportation. The locomotives are produced by Thyssen Henschel in Germany (Thyssen Henschel was acquired by Bombardier in the 2000s). The DI 4 was the first locomotive with electrical asynchrony engines.

  • 1970s

    In 1970, the first delivery of the regional passenger train Type 69 took place. These trains were produced at Strømmens Værksted and NEBB. In total 88 trains were delivered between 1970-1993. Type 69 is an electric train with three cars and the first in Norway with thyristor control for power regulation with central coupler.

  • 1950s

    In 1950, Bombardier is present in the Norwegian mountains with their snow mobiles. The snow mobiles had passenger room for twelve passengers and luggage racks on the roof. More than 100 vehicles were imported to Norway, and at least a dozen have been preserved up to the year 2016. The Bombardier Snowmobile was used as public bus transportation in sparsely populated regions with long distances between small population centres. There were two variants; the B7 with seven passengers and the B12 with twelve passengers.

  • 1870s

    In 1873 Strømmens Værksted is founded. The mechanical manufacturing facility with iron foundry originally built rail cars and smaller castings. The first rail car was delivered in 1874. Strømmens Værksted has built most of NSB's rail cars, NSB’s regional train sets and the first metro cars for Oslo Sporveier. Strømmens Værksted was still in operation until the 2000s, under the ownership of Bombardier Transportation. The department at Strømmens Værksted mainly carried out maintenance and modernisation of wagon material for NSB. The new royal carriage is one of the last rail cars to be built at Strømmens Værksted.
