Smart solutions for saving energy
With rising energy prices, many operators are looking for quick-wins to lower their operational costs and save on energy. In anticipation of this need, Alstom developed a portfolio of energy saving solutions for existing fleets as part of our smart modernisation catalogue. Our energy saving solutions focus on monitoring and upgrading the energy performance of the train’s main energy consuming subsystems. They also have the added benefit of indirectly reducing carbon emissions.
Alstom offers solutions to help you lower energy costs related to operating rolling stock assets. Our operation performance solutions include door upgrades, bogie-track interface, signalling upgrades, and even driving advisory systems, which can reduce traction energy consumption by up to 15%. This solution uses train, track and timetable information to calculate the most efficient way of driving a train, while ensuring your train arrives on time, despite minimal energy consumption.
We also have solutions to improve the energy performance of fleets, including traction, HVAC, and lighting upgrades, as well as energy monitoring. Realise up to 15% of energy saving thanks to our traction systems, power modules, drives and auxiliary converter upgrades. Alstom electric traction solutions are available for all types of rolling stock vehicles, from light rail through to locomotives. Your fleets will benefit from improved reliability, obsolescence treatment, traction lifetime extension and reduced energy consumption.

Life modernisation for Sao Paulo Metro lines 1 & 3, Brazil
From 2009 to 2014, Alstom undertook a life modernisation for Sao Paulo Metro’s fleets on lines 1 and 3 which were produced in 1974 and 1981. The scope included complete modernisation of the traction system, overhaul of various systems, and modernisation to align the comfort and passenger experience levels with the newer metros running on line 2. The modernisation provided 50% energy savings with regenerative braking, a 20% increase in reliability, and improved headways.
