Boosting maintenance efficiency with advanced analytics

Alstom uses advanced analytics to improve maintenance efficiency, and constantly improves the performance and level of automation of our analytics. We provide reliable information on the current and future condition of rail assets through Artificial Intelligence (AI), railway engineering knowledge, and data scientist expertise. We turn diagnostic events into actionable alerts, enable condition monitoring, and anticipate failures with predictive analytics. This leads to better performing rail assets by enabling faster troubleshooting and repairs, reducing over maintenance, and eliminating downtime.

Advanced maintenance analytics ensure the highest fleet performance
Using 3D cameras and lasers, Alstom’s TrainScannerTM automatically enables condition-based and predictive maintenance for wheels, brake pads and pantograph carbon strips, as well as on under-frames and body shells.

Harnessing smart data acquisition devices for automated inspections

Alstom provides automated inspection using smart data acquisition devices to monitor the condition of rail assets to improve reliability and availability and reduce maintenance costs. We use various devices depending on inspection needs, including TrainScanner™, Alstom’s solution for automatic train check-ups, InfraScanner for rail infrastructure, smart sensors, test benches and data interfaces. All related asset information from different data sources is consolidated into HealthHub™, where it can be analysed, and if there are faults, maintenance activities can be planned and executed.

Digitalisation for a seamless passenger experience

Digitalising the passenger experience is key to encouraging more people to choose rail over roads. With Alstom’s digital solutions for passenger experience, journeys onboard the train are more enjoyable, comfortable and safe for passengers. We offer dynamic passenger information systems to guide passengers in real-time from A to B, passenger entertainment systems with the latest technological advancements, and passenger security solutions including smart CCTV, streaming, and analytics.

Transforming data into actionable insights

Collecting and analysing data is critical for optimising the performance of railway systems and enables better maintenance planning, more efficient operations, and the highest passenger satisfaction. Alstom turns the data collected and analysed into actionable insights, and in turn, helps customers to better manage their daily operations. With the data collected we can mitigate and resolve many common issues that railway operators face.

Optimising energy with advanced data analytics

With rising energy prices, many operators are looking to reduce their energy consumption. But first, they need to understand how their fleet is consuming energy. Alstom’s digital solutions collect energy data from a fleet, and then it is consolidated and analysed in HealthHub™. The data provides a breakdown of energy consumption across the fleet by vehicle, but also by equipment and components. This data analysis enables operators to truly understand energy usage so that they can make informed decisions to reduce energy costs and environmental impact.

Reducing brake pad usage and maintenance costs

Driven by a high wear rate, brake pad maintenance can be very costly for operators, amounting to 600,000 per year. Alstom’s TrainScanner™ brake pad monitoring system can be installed to collect measurement data from brake pads. The data is then integrated into HealthHub™, where it can be reviewed by the local maintenance team to help them understand the condition of each brake pad. This reduces inspection time, improves maintenance scheduling, and reduces labour costs.

Extending the life of wheelsets with data fusion

Wheelsets are the number one cost when it comes to maintaining trains. Harnessing data from wheelsets optimises maintenance strategies and lowers maintenance-related costs. Alstom merges wheel data collected from all available data sources, including lathe, manual measurements, Alstom’s TrainScanner™ solutions, and customer-owned devices. This allows us to obtain more reliable insights on the condition of wheelsets without costly investments and enables wheelset life extension by up to 20%.

Monitoring toilet maintenance requirements to prevent in-service failures

Train toilets and sinks are used by passengers many times a day. This makes it a critical part of train operations and passenger experience. Non-functioning toilets can result in trains being pulled out of service, leading to penalties up to €10,000 per instance and a loss in passenger confidence. Toilets and sinks can be fitted with sensors to remotely monitor their condition and status. Alstom’s HealthHub™ with advanced analytics consolidates and analyses this data, providing information on the status and condition making it easy for maintainers to take the required maintenance actions, resulting in higher train availability and preventing penalties.

Using social media data to improve passenger experience

Analysing data from social media can be very useful for operators, helping them to gain insights on passenger experience and in-service issues. Rail passengers post about their travel experience on social media every day, but it can be difficult to review due to the volume of conversations. Alstom’s social media dashboard in HealthHub™ monitors posts on “X” (formerly Twitter) in an efficient way. Operators can review thousands of social interactions per day, seeing everything relevant to them across the social platform, enabling them to identify issues in real-time and quickly react to customer needs and concerns.
