Alstom Talk: eXtending your Rail reality - XR use cases in operations & maintenance

You’ve probably heard a lot about Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) – but what about eXtended Reality (XR), and what is its significance for the rail industry? XR is a universal term which covers Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality, in all forms and all possible interfaces. Alstom is using XR technologies to support our customers with training operations and maintenance staff on how to safely and efficiently operate rail assets and full transport systems. With XR solutions, we can provide safe and accessible training, anytime, anywhere, without the need of real rail assets. These XR training solutions are critical in enabling 100% system availability for our customers.

Back in September at InnoTrans 2024, our XR expert and passionate gamer, Stephen McNabb, Director of XR Training & Simulation at Alstom, held an Alstom Talk at our stand about how we used XR technologies, specifically, our next generation driving simulator and Virtual Reality 360° solution to train operations and maintenance staff for the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) automated metro system in Montreal, Canada.

To prepare REM for the challenges of operating an automated driverless metro system, Alstom developed a state-of-the-art hybrid cab simulator to train employees featuring a complete 3D model of the Alstom Metropolis™ metro trains and the REM network and over 50 training scenarios. Thanks to Alstom’s innovative first-person perspective avatar, it’s not only a driving simulator, but an operation simulator, allowing users to fix various in-service issues and gain expertise in all aspects of operating an automated system. Alstom also developed a virtual visit of one of the REM Metropolis™ metro trains to help staff become familiar with the automated system before it was available to them in person and train them on operation and emergency scenarios. The virtual visit allowed users to move through a 3D model of the train and explore different features of both the interior and exterior.
Tune into Stephen’s talk to learn more about Alstom’s XR solutions for REM, and how Alstom supported the customer with operations and maintenance preparations.
