Delivering efficiency: Smarter fleet investments through an optimised system approach

Efficiency at the system level…

Providing integrated solutions lead to smarter investments and maximised operational efficiency. That is why by leveraging on its expertise as a train manufacturer, Alstom offers a comprehensive system approach for our customers’ fleets that delivers efficient and cost-effective solutions throughout the lifecycle.

For example, Alstom’s switchgear is engineered to ensure efficiency in electrical integration. With over 50 years of switchgear engineering experience, our switchgear solutions are designed to optimise the entire traction system, for all-the-more robust electrical performance that enhances operational safety.

Efficiency at the product performance level…

In addition, Alstom's components are designed for exceptional energy efficiency and performance.

Applying the silicon carbide (SiC) technology alongside permanent magnet motor propulsion systems in traction converters and auxiliary converters offers significant benefits, including up to 30% reduction in energy consumption while ensuring quieter operations. These technologies have already been successfully implemented for various metro networks across key cities in the Middle East (e.g., Riyadh, Dubai) and Southeast Asia (Hanoi) as well as Chengdu in China.

The implementation of multi-level topology further enhances Mitrac™ traction system’s performance by optimising the switching losses, enabling smoother and more efficient power delivery to trains.

In addition, our expertise in developing and manufacturing traction systems enables us to provide system level optimisation for our customers.

These energy solutions are not just efficient - they are tailored to fit diverse operational needs, ensuring that customers receive the best traction architecture for specific environments. With Alstom, customers can confidently invest in technology that propels fleets forward while also achieving sustainability targets.

Alstom can provide further efficient operations through its Flexx™ bogies portfolio, designed to provide exceptional performance and cost-effectiveness. For example, the compact Flexx Eco™ bogie, showcases a revolutionary design that significantly reduces weight, resulting in up to 25% savings on lifecycle costs.

With Flexx Smart™ bogies, passenger experience is transformed, with a cutting-edge levelling system which seamlessly adjusts train heights to align with platform levels, ensuring smooth and accessible boarding for everyone.

Delivering availability: How our components and services keep trains on tracks

Availability derived from reliability and durability…

Alstom’s components can cope with various operational conditions.

For example, our Mitrac™ traction solutions stand out with the capability to adapt to diverse environments: varying climatic conditions, voltages and vehicle configurations (roof-mounted or underframe-mounted designs).

Our portfolio of brake discs and pads are specifically designed to ensure best-in-class performance based on a unique patented design that extends the lifespan of the friction pair to up to twice the industry average.

Another asset in the Mitrac portfolio is our Mitrac Protect™ switchgear products, which deliver benefits through compact circuit breakers that allow easy integration into existing setups, and reduced lifecycle cost thanks to competitive investment and extended maintenance intervals. As the only switchgear provider with traction competency, Alstom is able to optimise the traction system and reduce the weight and volume of the traction system on the train for instance by reducing the size of traction transformers.

Other proofs of the reliability and durability of Alstom’s components include the obvious go-to solution for optimal passenger comfort by utilisaton of the Dispen™ dampersThey are designed for maintainability, leading to extended maintenance intervals and a reduced environmental impact.

The full range of linear, friction, and bi-mode dampers make Alstom a key supplier for all damping solutions.

"Our components are designed for improved total cost of ownership (TCO), setting new industry standards. For decades, we have made our component products and solutions available not only to Alstom but also to any other player on the railway market, so they can benefit from Alstom’s unrivalled expertise and system approach."

Availability through services…

Alstom not only designs and manufactures components but is also a leading rail services provider. The Group has developed an extensive portfolio of services covering the entire lifecycle of rail assets. Its FlexCare Sustain™ solutions are designed to maximise the longevity of rail components through repair, overhaul, and obsolescence services.

To bring components back to like-new condition, it relies on its global network of over 50 services and repair centres and ten component services centres (CSCs) with specialised engineering component service engineering knowledge. These CSC’s provide specialised support and customised maintenance for Alstom and other OEM components, including bogies, brakes, traction and more.

For example, at our component repair and overhaul centre in Coimbatore, India, we provide services for a wide range of components, including traction converters, auxiliary power supply converters, as well as power modules and switchgears. Our teams support projects all around the world, mainly in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East and Africa, but also across Europe and the Americas. With its global reach, Alstom can quickly respond to customer needs for all major components and offer them efficient maintenance services, resulting in reduced downtime for fleets and optimised operations.

"Our customers know they can count on us to keep their rail assets running safely and reliably. We’re proud to offer an extensive portfolio of component repair and overhaul services for all major rolling stock subsystems. Regardless of where our customers operate, we are able to support them thanks to our global network of service and repair centres."
