06 May 2024 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, and Polo Logistica - the grouping of Italian FS Group companies operating in freight transport and logistics - celebrated the completion and delivery of the first Traxx Universal DC locomotive equipped with Last Mile at the Alstom site in Vado Ligure (SV) in the presence of the institutions.
The locomotive being delivered to Polo Logistica is part of the 20 optional locomotives that will be added to the 40 already in commercial service as part of the contract signed in December 2017, and is the first equipped with Last Mile.
Igniting the locomotive were Edoardo Rixi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Giacomo Raul Giampedrone, Councillor for Public Works, Infrastructure and Roads of the Liguria Region, Alessandro Berta, Director of Unione Industriali Savona, Michele Viale, Managing Director Alstom Italy, Sabrina De Filippis, Managing Director and General Manager of Mercitalia Logistics and Polo Logistica and Silvio Damagini, CEO of Mercitalia Rail.
“We are very happy to celebrate this important occasion together with Polo Logistica, our long-standing customer and pioneer of high-power electric locomotives. Today marks the delivery of the first Traxx Universal DC locomotive equipped with the Last Mile, a significant milestone in our partnership” said Michele Viale, Managing Director Alstom Italy. “Over the last 20 years, more than 2700 Traxx locomotives have been sold in Europe, of which more than 250 in Italy. All Traxx Universal™ DC locomotives for the Italian market are produced at Alstom's Vado Ligure site, a site of excellence that for over one hundred years has handled all phases of vehicle design and production thanks to the know-how of over 300 people."
The Traxx Universal DC four-axle electric locomotive designed specifically for freight transport, characterised by its efficiency in electricity consumption and high traction capacity, represents excellence that adapts over the years to the evolution of new contexts and different operational needs. The more functional design, compared to previous versions, allows the application of a maintenance plan with longer intervals and a reduced number of interventions, while maintaining high levels of reliability and availability.
An innovative element is the Last Mile feature, which allows the train to connect to non-electrified areas without the need for shunting locomotives.
The event represents an important milestone for Polo Logistica of the FS Group, confirming its commitment to achieving the ambitious objectives of the 2023-2032 Industrial Plan. At the heart of this plan is the renewal of the rolling stock to ensure increasingly efficient and sustainable services, enhancing the excellence of Made in Italy both nationally and internationally. The investments for fleet renewal, terminal enhancement, process digitalisation and the development of new partnerships aim, with determination, to redefine the future of freight transport with a view to greater rail-road-sea integration.
The Alstom site in Vado Ligure employs over 300 people and covers a total area of 63,000 square metres, 28,000 of which are dedicated to production. For more than a century, the Ligurian site has been involved in various stages, including electrical and pneumatic sub-assembly, bogie assembly, painting and final assembly of vehicles, testing, rain testing and weighing of vehicles, and repair of power and control electronics.
