Tram manufacturer invests 1 million euro in site
16 November 2023 - Today, Thursday, representatives from politics and the media met for the ceremonial opening of the welding cathedral at the Alstom site in Vienna Donaustadt. The expansion and further development of the welding facilities was made possible by an investment of around 1 million euro.
Lilian Meyer, the new Managing Director of Alstom Austria, emphasises: "This is a clear commitment by Alstom to the Vienna site. As a reliable partner for Vienna and the world, Alstom is the only tram manufacturer to produce exclusively in Austria. This creates sustainable added value locally."
"Alstom is an important partner for the City of Vienna on the road to the mobility transition. Everyone is now familiar with the ultra-modern and comfortable Flexity trams that run on several lines in Vienna. I am delighted that Alstom is continuing to invest in Vienna and wish them continued success!" said Peter Hanke, City Councillor for Finance and Economy.
The Vienna Flexity trams, for example, are produced directly by Alstom in Vienna. Gudrun Senk, CTO of Wiener Linien, explains: "Our new Flexity trams from Alstom not only offer a high level of passenger comfort and comprehensive accessibility, but are also produced locally in Vienna. That's sustainability in action at all levels!"
In order to increase the output rate from 2.5 to five trams per month, the new, innovative layout of the welding cathedral was designed and realised on site. The conversion created two separate production lines. The health of the employees was particularly important to the company. The welders benefit directly from the welding cathedral thanks to better ergonomics and minimised working time in a kneeling or overhead position.
