Alstom, as a member of the Tram di Firenze S.p.A.[1] consortium, presented the first 100 metres of Florences new tramway line 2 to the Mayor of the city, Dario Nardella, in Novoli. This milestone has been achieved on time, in compliance with the project schedule.
The contract awarded to Tram di Firenze S.p.A. by the municipal council involves the turnkey construction of line 2 and the first stretch of line 3 of the citys tramway system. The concession, which was granted under conditions of project financing[2], also includes the management of the entire system, including line 1 which was constructed under a separate contract. Alstom is responsible for the installation of the tracks, the contact lines, the substations as well as the lighting and electrical distribution. Alstoms Guidonia site, in Italy, which is specialised in the production of railway infrastructure, is in charge of the project.
As this project milestone shows, Alstom is committed to contributing to Florences tramway system by executing the project on time while guaranteeing the highest standards of quality, declared Pierre-Louis Bertina, Managing Director for Alstom Transport in Italy.
Once completed, Florences tramway system will consist of three lines covering 19 kilometres. Line 1, which connects Scandicci to Santa Maria Novella station, has been operating since 2010. Line 2, which will connect Peretola airport to Santa Maria Novella station, and line 3, which will run from the station to Careggi via Fortezza da Basso, are still under construction and will be finished by 2017.
