Alstom has been awarded a contract by Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) in Australia to install a Digital Train Radio System (DTRS) for its fleet of 74 suburban XTrapolis trains as well as the eight new trains ordered by Public Transport Victoria in June 2013. The integration work for the 74 trainsets in service will be performed in the customer depot and will take approximately 14 months, while the integration on the eight remaining trains will be carried out before delivery of the new trains scheduled in 2015.

The contract is part of the ongoing improvement and modernisation of Melbournes metropolitan rail network, as the current Urban Train Radio System (UTRS) which was implemented in 1989 is now approaching the end of its serviceable life.  The DTRS, which is based on the GSM-R1   wireless communications standard, will enable train controllers, train drivers, train guards and signalers to use a single system for voice and data communication, allowing them to communicate more efficiently with each other and with the central control centre.

Alstom will preassemble the DTRS electrical harness and cabinets at its manufacturing facility in Ballarat to minimize the work on the trains and therefore reduce time and cost for the client.

Bernard Joyce, Managing Director for Alstom Transport in Australia said this project has a challenging timeframe but is very important for Melbournes rail network. Alstom is committed to delivering a seamless and fluid programme for MTM that is designed to ensure maximum availability of the fleet during the installation phase and a more reliable and safer network following the installation.
