Alstom Grid has been awarded a contract worth 38 million from National Grid SA, in Saudi Arabia, to provide its Network Management Solutions (NMS) for the National Control Centre (NCC) in Northwest Riyadh. This will create the first ever energy market management system in the Middle East and will ultimately bring about an electricity wholesale market between various stakeholders. The first phase is scheduled for delivery 2015.

Alstom Grids technology will provide National Grid with a consolidated view to manage the complete Saudi extra high voltage transmission network. The new Energy Management System (EMS) will interconnect the existing four regional control centres previously delivered by Alstom and will provide interconnection with Gulf countries through GCCIA the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority- also running an Alstom-supplied energy management system.

"We are proud to be selected by National Grid SA to contribute to further improve Saudi Arabias electricity grid landscape. Alstom Grids technology now controls more than 60% of energy flow in the region and this contract underscores Alstom's leading position delivering proven technology for the most reliable smart solutions in mission-critical electricity control rooms," said Karim El-Naggar, Vice President for Alstom Grids Network Management Solutions.

In addition to the development and delivery of an energy management system, Alstom will provide an electricity market management system and telecommunications system, including an extended dedicated high capacity telecommunication infrastructure  over optical fibre, so that  information can be exchanged across national and regional control centres.  Training and support services will also be provided.

In addition to the four regional control centres already in operation in Saudi, Alstom is currently delivering two distribution management systems in Taif and Madina.
