Alstom has signed two contracts with Reftinskaya power plant in Russia and Krivorozhskaya power plant in Ukraine with a total value of approximately 2.5 million Euros (65 million CZK). Further contracts in this region are being negotiated. Czech Alstoms Boiler Products division won the contracts with its offer of a next-generation Ljungstrom rotary regenerative air preheater for power stations and heat generation plants. The main benefits of this modernisation include a significant efficiency boost of the power source and consequent fuel savings and pollution reduction. The investment is expected to return within one and a half to two and a half years.

One of the key reasons this product is in demand relies on the fact that the air preheater upgrade reduces air-to-gas leakage by 60 to 80%. The new solution increases the boiler's efficiency, which means a significant reduction of fuel consumption, explains Petr Brzezina, Country President of Czech Republic for Alstom, adding: What is exceptional about this modernisation concept is that it can be applied to all types and brands of regenerative air preheaters including those installed in Ukraine and Russia. This fact is of strategic importance for Alstom.

Alstom estimates that there are hundreds of boilers in Russia and Ukraine where this type of upgrade is applicable. The country is planning to modernise 16 power generation blocs by 2015 including air preheaters.

The new concept of regenerative air preheaters by Alstom is a result of the companys 50 years of experience with development of such devices. In the Czech Republic the company already modernised air preheaters at Prunerov II and III, Tusimice, and Chvaletice (and modernised in total over 160 air preheaters in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, the Balkans, and Cuba).
