Alstom has been awarded a contract worth more than $ 90 million CA (65 million) for Hydro-Québecs La Romaine 3 power house, one of four new power houses that make up the 1,550 MW La Romaine hydroelectric complex, located north of the municipality of Havre-Saint-Pierre on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. This contract was booked during first quarter of fiscal year 2013/2014.

The scope of the contract includes the supply of two 200 MW vertical Francis turbine-generator units complete with butterfly valves and regulation systems. Alstom will install and commission the equipment at the La Romaine 3 site.

The design of the turbines, generators, and auxiliaries, and the project management will be led by the experienced team from Alstoms North American hydro headquarters and factory located in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec. The design of the units will incorporate the health and safety standards required by the customer.

This contract award demonstrates Hydro-Québecs continued confidence in Alstom and confirms our leadership position in supplying customers with hydro power generation equipment, said Claude Lambert, Vice President and General Manager for Alstoms North American hydro activities. These high-performing and reliable Francis turbine-generator units for La Romaine 3 will be developed based on proven technology that has been used in other Hydro-Québec projects, he concluded.

In March 2010, Alstom signed a contract for the supply of two 320 MW turbine-generator units for La Romaine 2. Alstom equipment at La Romaine 2 and 3, the largest of the complexs four power houses, will account for two-thirds of the total 1,550 MW of electricity produced (5.3 TWh out of a total 8.0 TWh annually).

Alstom Grid, the companys power transmission sector, is also contributing to the broader La Romaine hydroelectric complex through the supply of high voltage switchgear equipment - disconnect switches and circuit breakers.  Alstom will manufacture the switchgear apparatus at its facility in La Prairie, Quebec.
