Alstom equipment will cut nitrogen oxide emissions of Kladno power plant by 50%

Alstom and Alpiq Generation (CZ) signed a contract today for the modernisation of a power plant operated by Alpiq Generation (CZ) in Kladno. The contract is valued at over 4 million and will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by up to a half in the Kladno region. The existing coal-fired fluidized bed boilers will be refurbished in 2014 in this first project of its kind in the Czech Republic.

In 2010, the EU released the Industrial Emissions directive, which will come into effect in 2016, requiring combustion plants producing more than 50 MW¹ to cut nitrogen oxide emissions down to 200 mg/Nm3.  Alstom technology will help Alpiq Generation (CZ), a power utility company active in Central Bohemia and in Zlin, to meet these limits a year in advance resulting in an immediate improvement in air quality upon completion of the project.

Alstom specialises in projects to cut nitrogen oxide emissions. Until now, only pulverised coal boilers were modernised in the Czech Republic. Modernising one of the largest power plants with fluidized bed boilers is very unique for Alstom and the whole industry, says Petr Brzezina, Alstoms President for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Due to its location, Kladno often suffers from inversion accompanied by increased air pollution, especially at the end of autumn and beginning of winter when inversion risks are the highest. The aim of the plants modernisation project is to not only comply with the new pollution limits but also to alleviate this situation in the Kladno region.

By installing modern technology from Alstom, we will cut nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 50 per cent. The investment is fully in line with our social responsibility strategy and is subsidised by the State Environmental Fund, which will cover up to 40% of the investment costs, says Milan Prajzler, General Manager Alpiq Generation (CZ).

This is not Alstoms first clean power solution project in Czech Republic aimed at reducing the environmental impact of power generation. Its first project was completed in 2010 where Alstom successfully reduced nitrogen oxide emissions at the Prunerov power plant owned by CEZ. Alstom continues to deliver pollution reduction technologies to help power utility owners and industrial customers comply with the new EU directive, both in the Czech Republic and abroad.
