International engineering firm Alstom, which employs around 6,500 people in the UK, has revealed first quarter UK sales of £261m, together with details of more than 600 vacancies it has across the country.
The company, which operates in the Rail, Power Generation and Electrical Transmission sectors, also has an order book worth another £157m following recent contract wins with EDF, London Underground, Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission, Centrica and Crossrail.
Alstoms continuing success also means that it has 212 open vacancies at its Grid basis (all based in Stafford), 178 in its Thermal Power division and 194 in its Transport division, together with 16 in its Renewable Power arm.
The main areas for vacancies are:
Stafford 226 positions;
Rugby 49 positions; and
Ashby-de-la-Zouch 41 positions.
In addition to the current level of vacancies, Alstom has filled more than 650 positions in the last 12 months.
Terence Watson, Alstoms UK President, said: Its heartening that, in what are difficult times, we continue to win major orders across the country and to increase our headcount at a time when many companies are struggling.
We have 600 vacancies already and, going forward, we believe thats only going to continue for example our three Crossrail contracts will see us take on an additional 500 people as we fit out the tunnels and install power.
Our continuing success comes from being able to offer innovative products, systems integration, top class maintenance work and engineering expertise to clients not only in the UK but also overseas, where we get around a quarter of our turnover.
Thats why we have dedicated growth plans that we believe will see us grow turnover, expertise, exports and headcount for the foreseeable future as we build on our already exceptional results and teams.
Alstom has major operations in Stafford (where it is the towns biggest employer and also runs a global centre of excellence across the group), and in Rugby ( where Alstom employs 700 people, designs steam turbines for clients across the world, has a research and development team and services steam turbine generators from across the globe).
The company is currently lead contractor for the 880 MW Carrington gas-fired power station in Greater Manchester and is part of the consortium building the extension to Nottinghams tram system (where Alstom will also supply 22 new Citadis trams for the city).
