Alstom Grid has reinforced the centre of excellence for mobile substations located in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), Spain. The Spanish facilities will become a worldwide reference in the design, development and manufacturing of mobile substations. America, the Middle East and Africa are the major export markets for the equipment produced in Madrid
Substations form an essential part of the generation, transmission and distribution process of power to the end customer. Occasionally, the equipment housed in an electric substation is affected by catastrophes, maintenance operations or improvement works. In these cases, and to guarantee supply, Alstom Grid provides its customers with a range of mobile substations.
Mobile substations are designed to distribute electricity on a temporary basis to areas that have lost their power supply and enable winning time to conduct any necessary repairs, maintenance or equipment changes. They are also used, on occasion, to temporarily increase a specific substations capacity. Given that they can be installed anywhere in a matter of hours, they have become an essential tool to guarantee supply in the current electrical system.
With over 30 units in operation, Alstom Grid´s customers in Spain include the main utility companies (Iberdrola, Endesa, Union Fenosa and Eon), as well as the public grid company (Red Eléctrica de España REE).
The centre of excellence located in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) is also an export hub. Mobile substations are currently exported worldwide (Angola, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Venezuela, Sweden, etc.). The Spanish unit has proved its specific "know-how" of this solution which is guaranteed by quality certifications ISO 9001-2000, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18000.
