Alstom has inaugurated its new mobile precision workshop facility in Tianjin, China. Operated by Alstom Thermal Services business in China, the workshop aims to meet the increasing needs of customers across China by providing on-site and superior quality repair services in maintaining large steam turbines, generators and related equipment at customer premises on a very short notice.

With an area of 1,800 square meters, the new facility accommodates a modern office and an advanced equipment and machinery management area. It is equipped with the latest technology including a CNC controlled mobile lathe machine with the ability to process large steam turbine and generator rotors. The workshop also includes high precision tools like low speed balancing and machining solutions for valve repairs.

Alstoms mobile precision workshop started operation in Tianjin in 2010 and is part of a global network consisting of 5 mobile workshops around the world. Operated by Alstoms skilled and experienced teams, the workshop engages in specialised on-site machining services for turbine, generator rotors, flange, casings and valves, with capability and experience on units up to 1000 MW.

After a first success in an on-site repair on a high-pressure steam turbine rotor for Huaneng Shanghai Shidongkou second power plant in 2010, the workshop has provided specialised high-quality on-site services for more than 20 plants, such as the low speed balancing of the 1000 MW HP rotor for unit 1 of Daya Bay nuclear power plant as well as the mobile service performed at the highest altitude ever in a fossil power plant in Lhasa, Tibet.

"It is increasingly important to our customers that equipment transportation time and risk are avoided during outage maintenance cycles. For the past three years our Tianjin mobile precision workshop has proven its versatility and ability to service our customers requirements allowing for quick return-to-service time and improved equipment efficiency," said Liu Yi, Managing Director of Alstom Thermal Services in China, "The new workshop demonstrates the dynamic development in the segment over the past years and I am fully confident that it will play a pivotal role in the future growth of Alstom Thermal Services in China."
