On February 10th the first 7 stations of Milans automatic metro line 5 will enter commercial service.
Alstom, as member of the Società di Progetto Metro 5 consortium supplied the infrastructure, including the electric supply systems, electrical substations, traction systems, intrusion and fire detection systems, and the platform screen doors to ensure passengers safety. Two Alstom plants in Italy, Guidonia (Rome) and Sesto San Giovanni (Milan), are involved in the project, providing infrastructure and project management respectively.
Milans metro line 5 will be completed before the opening of Expo 2015 (Universal Exposition), hosted by Milan. it runs fully underground, representing approximately 19 km in length and crossing the city from Bignami station to San Siro football stadium with 19 stations. Its transport capacity will amount to 26.000 passengers per hour.
ATM, the public transport operator of the city of Milan, will manage the service of metro line 5.
