In December 2012 Alstom handed over the new 50 MW generator for the Jaworzno II biomass[1] co-fired steam power plant to its customer Tauron Wytwarzanie S.A. The new generator, which replaced the one built in the 1960s in Russia, is the first fully designed and managed project for Alstoms Thermal Service unit based in Wroclaw (Poland).
The Alstom project received for Jaworznos first biomass co-firing unit included the delivery of a new 50 MW rotor and stator, associated other equipment as well as the commissioning of the generator. Alstoms factory in Wroclaw manufactured the generator stator and was responsible for the shop assembly of the various components produced at other Alstom factories in Switzerland.
Tauron Wytwarzanie S.A. continues, together with other Polish utilities, to invest into renewable energy production. The adding of new biomass fired power plants is part of Polands strategy to implement the European Directive to increase the share of renewable energy in total energy production capacity. To support this initiative Alstom is supplying know-how and technologies for biomass co-firing to Polish power plant operators. The companys experience in the field of retrofits for biomass co-fired power plants in the country includes amongst others the steam turbine retrofit for the Polaniec power plant unit 9 biomass co-firing conversion.

[1] Biomass is a renewable energy source using organic materials which include for example wood and wood wastes, agricultural or municipal solid waste. Biomass co-fired steam power plants reduce CO2 emissions thanks to efficient, flexible boiler technologies that enable optimum use of biomass co-firing.
