Alstom recently commissioned the first of three electrostatic precipitators at the oil-fired power plant José Aceves Pozos in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, achieving a major improvement in air quality, by capturing more than 90% particulate emissions which were emitted into the atmosphere. With this project, Alstom stands as the technological leader for Air Pollution Control Systems (AQCS) in the Mexican market.

Electrostatic precipitators filter gasses generated during furnace combustion, greatly reducing emissions opacity until undetectable, and getting particle capture efficiency higher than 90%, which allows the 616 MW oil-fired power plant of Comisión Federal de Electricidad to comply with specifications related to environmental matters, according to the new NOM-085-SEMARNAT-2011 standard regarding maximum allowed levels of opacity and pollutant particle emissions into the atmosphere when using fossil fuels.

This new government policy NOM-085-SEMARNAT-2011 is an example of genuine will in environmental protection matters from the Secretariat of Energy, the SERMANAT and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad.  The use of this brand new clean technology will grant a huge benefit for the environment as well as for public health as particle capture from combustion gasses will notably improve air quality in the region.

Alstom Mexico´s President, Ph.D. Cintia Angulo, said: To Alstom, this is a crucial step in the progress towards sustainable energy and efficient generation. This is the first air pollution control system in the country and has a positive and major impact in our customers as well as in the whole population of the region. This project brings public health and environmental protection, gaining a high social profitability. This is a technological and environmental accomplishment from Alstom and from CFE and SEMARNAT.

Alstom is a global leader in AQCS equipment to power and industrial customers. To date, Alstom has installed more than 100 SWFGD systems in different parts of the world, corresponding to a total equivalent capacity of about 42 GW. Alstom has also installed more than 360 Fabric Filter systems, 95 Wet FGD systems, 1100 Electrostatic Precipitators and 100 NID systems worldwide.
