Network Rail has awarded Signalling Solutions Ltd (SSL) a contract worth approximately 20 million pounds to install Alstom's Smartlock interlocking technology to replace the current electromechanical signalling on the Poole-Wool line on the South West coast. The main commissioning is to be completed in spring 2013.

A new Smartlock interlocking system will replace four existing mechanical signal boxes and will control their combined area from a new entrance/exit NX panel located in the Basingstoke Area Signalling Centre. The area controlled by the new system represents approximately twelve miles.

The resignalling will also enable a regular return passenger service to operate from Swanage to Wareham as well as more flexibility of train movements in the area.

Smartlock is already in service at a number of sites in the UK; SSL has installed the technology at Horsham, East Kent, Southampton and Paddington in London and is currently delivering projects at Norwich-Ely, Bletchley, Nottingham, and the Hertford North Integration Facility.

Steve McLaren, MD of Signalling Solutions Ltd said: “We look forward to executing this project and I am confident that the combination of SSL’s skills and high-performance Smartlock technology will lead to a successful project delivery.”
