Full service maintenance of the fleets of major Italian operators and international excellence in signalling are the main themes underpinning Alstom attendance at this 2012 edition.

Side events will include: the presentation of a research carried out by CLAS Group on export figures in Italian railway sector and a debate on sustainable design in collaboration with IED Turin.

From 27th to 29th March in Turin, the Lingotto Fiere exhibition centre will host the fifth edition of Expo Ferroviaria, the most important Italian trade fair dedicated to the railway industry. In this 2012 edition, the new products presented by Alstom (Hall 1 - Stand 626) will especially concern maintenance and signalling, while an in-depth study will be dedicated to regional transportation.

Full Service Maintenance for Major Italian Operators

Thanks to the experience acquired in the maintenance of fleets all over the world, especially in Spain and UK, and to the use of advanced technologies, in the last two years Alstom was awarded preventive and corrective maintenance contracts for the fleets of all major Italian operators. The last, recently acquired contract includes preventive and corrective maintenance operations, data management and engineering support for the entire fleet of Minuetto regional trains supplied to Trenitalia by Alstom.

Since 2009, Alstom has been in charge of preventive and corrective maintenance for Trenitalia ETR600/New Pendolino fleet in service under the name of FrecciArgento, at Trenitalia depot of San Lorenzo (Rome). This activity has recently been extended also to 7 high speed ETR610/New Pendolino trains. Besides this, Alstom ensures preventive and corrective maintenance of the fleet of 14 new Coradia Meridian regional trains running as Malpensa Express for Trenord, at Milano Fiorenza depot, and of the fleet of 25 AGV trains supplied to NTV at the new depot of Nola, Naples.

Italian Excellence in Railway Signalling to renew the Danish System

In January, Banedanmark, the Danish railway infrastructure owner, has awarded Alstom a contract worth around 300 million to replace the existing railway signalling system in the East region of Denmark. The Italian site of Bologna, centre of excellence of the Group for railway signalling, which has already supplied similar equipment to RFI (FS Group) on the high speed lines Rome-Naples and Bologna-Florence, was entrusted with the project. Alstom will replace the old system with its Atlas signalling solution, which is based on the European railway traffic management and control system ERTMS. Alstoms Atlas solution will enable Banedanmark to increase traffic regularity and double the capacity of a railway network, which consists of a 734 km-long double track line and more than 90 stations, and serves most inhabited regions of Denmark

The contract covers the design, manufacturing and supply of a complete ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 signalling system. Based on Alstoms proven Atlas solution, the project comprises: the ATP (Automatic Train Protection) system; Smartlock, a computer-based automatic interlocking solution; Iconis, an advanced integrated control centre that includes the automatic traffic management system ATS (Automatic Train Supervision); SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), as well as Smartway conventional track products (point machines, train detection, and level crossings).

Coradia Meridian for Regional Mobility

All in all there are 14 Coradia Meridian trainsets manufactured by Alstom for Trenord and designed for Malpensa Express service, the only railway link between the regional capital, Milan, and the airport. Delivery of the last new trainsets is in progress and will be completed before summer. The new modular trainsets are an evolution of Alstom Coradia family operating across Italy, from Trento in the north to Bari in the south, for a total of 272 trains. Designed to meet the increased demand for mobility in Lombardy, on the outskirts of the town of Milan, the new train is 82.2 m long and 2.9 m wide. It has 230 seats and is able to reach speeds of up to 160 kph.

Train design is based on new comfort, safety and accessibility standards. The platform-level access to carriages facilitates passenger flows, while the bridging plates integrated in each door extend so as to fill the gap between the train and platform edge while in station, thereby ensuring an easy access for wheelchair users, too. Every trainset is made up of five cars. Each carriage is equipped with luggage space. Trains provide users with many onboard services: video-surveillance system, internal LED information displays visible from anywhere in the train, public address system, Braille signs, 220 V sockets to supply power to mobile phones and laptops. Coradia family trains meet Alstoms environmental sustainability policy and are 95% recyclable.

Three Alstom Italian plants are involved in the design and manufacture of the train. The site of Savigliano, Cuneo, will be responsible for project development, part of the train manufacturing process, and type-approval activities. The plant of Sesto San Giovanni, Milan, will be in charge of designing and manufacturing traction systems and auxiliary switchers. The site of Bologna will instead be responsible for trainborne signalling systems.

Side Events: Export, Design and Technological Innovation

Alstom experts will speak at the meetings organized by CIFI College of Railway Engineers. This year, the meetings will be devoted to automated metro systems and Italian design worldwide.

The busy schedule of side events organized by Alstom during the trade fair includes:

  • 27th March Technical visit to the plant of Savigliano, Cuneo, the Groups centre of excellence for Pendolino and suburban trains.
  • 28th March - at 1.30 p.m. at the Exhibitors Forum (Hall 2), Alstom will present a study of CLAS group on the exports of Italian companies in the railway sector. The speaker will be Mr. Alberto Milotti, professor at Bocconi University, within the Masters Degree in Economics and Management of Infrastructures and Transports (MEMIT).
  • 28th March at 5.00 p.m. at the Pinacoteca Agnelli, representatives of the great names of Italian design: Bertone, Giugiaro, Pininfarina and Lorenzo Bertuccio, expert in mobility management, will discuss the theme: More with Less Railway Design and Environmental Sustainability in a debate promoted by Alstom and the European Institute of Design (IED) in Turin.
