From August 17-19, a group of Alstom’s technical and commercial leaders in fossil fuel technologies travelled to Columbus, Ohio, in the heartland of the US, to participate in Coal-Gen 2011, an industry conference focused on the environmental, operational and technical innovations for coal-based power generation.

The US coal fleet is facing an alphabet soup of new environmental regulations (CSAPR, MACT, etc) which will drive decisions on either investing in new emissions controls or shutting down the unit.

At Coal-Gen, Alstom conference delegates presented technical papers, chaired conference sessions and discussed/debated key issues on panels.

Alstom also sponsored and staffed the Cyber Café, an 'online oasis' for conference attendees to access their emails and other online sites, while enjoying a cup of coffee with Alstom technical and sales experts.

On the second day of the conference, Alstom presented a "Lunch and Learn" seminar for invited clients, which addressed "Options to Reduce Emissions and Increase Reliability of Your Coal Fleet". Environmental systems and boiler experts discussed the retrofit aspects of new SO2 and NOx  controls on older coal units.

Columbus, Ohio is the headquarters of American Electric Power, one of the largest electric utilities in the US, operating almost 25 GW of coal-fired power plants distributed nationwide. In addition, within 150 miles of Columbus, over 47 GW of coal-based power is operated by a host of generation companies. With this line-up of generation plant staff likely to attend the conference, Alstom also met privately with key clients attending the conference.

These multiple areas of participation provided Alstom the opportunity to present its product and service offering for the US' large installed coal fleet as well as our leadership in advanced new coal plant technologies.

Alstom presented the following technical papers at Coal-Gen 2011:

  •  Carbon capture and storage: "CCS project: Chilled Ammonia process at the AEP Mountaineer Plant"
Fred Kozak, Vauhini Telikapalli, Rameshwar Hiwale - Alstom; co-author - Rob Bollinger AEP
  • "Coal Pulverizer Modifications to Enable 100% Wood Pellet Grinding"
Stanley Kmiotek Alstom, co- author - Les Marshall Ontario Power
  • Carbon capture and storage: "Oxy-combustion: A Promising CCS Technology"
