The installation environmental permit for Teles Pires was released on August 19th starting the site mobilization for the construction of the plant scheduled for 2015.

Global leader in power generation equipment and services, Alstom has an important role in this strategic project, with a contract worth 180 million to provide important hydroelectric equipment for the 1,820 megawatt (MW) Teles Pires hydroelectric power plant.

Alstom is supplying five 360 MW Francis turbines, regulators, as well as associated hydro mechanical and lifting components equipments to Companhia Hidrelétrica Teles Pires, a partnership between companies Neoenergia (50,1%), Furnas (24,5%), Eletrosul (24,5%) and OPI (0.9%).

Brazil has enjoyed a big economic growth for over a decade. Upon completion in 2015, Teles Pires will play a crucial role in meeting countrys energy needs. When operating at full capacity, the plant will generate enough power to meet the electricity needs of over 5 million people.

Jérôme Pécresse, President Alstom Renewable Power, said: Brazil is the world's third largest producer of hydropower and has been a global leader in renewable energy for decades. Alstom has played a key role in supporting Brazil's long-term commitment to build a clean energy future and strengthen its energy security. The Teles Pires contract is, therefore, a further strong endorsement of Alstom's technology and project execution capabilities."

This project is a reference in Francis equipment for low head in Latin America, especially because the rotors of its five turbines, which will be the biggest ever supplied in all region.

This way, Teles Pires beside Tucuruí and Foz do Chapecó hydro power plants reinforces Alstoms leading position in Francis low-head equipment market.

The equipment will be manufactured at Alstoms manufacturing facility in Taubaté, São Paulo state, Brazil.

Hydropower accounts for more than 80% of Brazils power production. Alstom, presents in Brazil for 55 years, has supplied in the last decade more than 100 hydro turbines and generators to the Brazilian market and its equipment accounts for 35% of Brazils installed hydro capacity. Previous contracts with the members of the Teles Pires Energia Eficiente consortium include the 450 MW Itapebi hydro power plant with Neoenergia and the 3,150 MW (Santo Antonio hydro power plant) and 855 MW Foz de Chapecó hydro power plants with Furnas.
