The Mexican private operator Ferrocarril y Terminal del Valle de México (Ferrovalle) recently entrusted Alstom with the maintenance of 660 km of track. The contract, worth almost 40 million, will run for eleven years. Maintenance work began at the end of July 2011.

A key player in the Mexican rail system, Ferrovalle operates rail infrastructure in the centre of the country. Its responsibilities include the assembly and points of the fleets of Mexicos major rail freight operators, including Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM), Ferromex and Ferrosur. Every year, around 60 million tonnes of merchandise and 300,000 containers are transported. Ferrovalle is owned jointly by KCSM, Ferromex, Ferrosur and the Mexican federal government Ministry for Communication and Transport.

Alstom will be responsible for the corrective and preventive maintenance of all 660 km of track operated by Ferrovalle. The maintenance team will consist of over 100 employees, of whom some 90 will be transferred from Ferrovalle.

Alstom has performed this type of maintenance work on a line operated by KCSM for more than 10 years. The excellent results achieved on this line convinced Ferrovalle to entrust the maintenance of its tracks to Alstom, declared Henri Bussery, Chairman of Alstom Transport Latin America. This new contract reveals how Alstom is consolidating its role in the services market in Mexico, he added.
