Signalling Solutions Limited (SSL), a joint venture company of Alstom Transport and Balfour Beatty Rail, has been recognised at the prestigious Railway Industry Innovation Awards.

The company received a Highly Commended award in the Safety and Engineering category for its  modular signalling concept an innovative approach to re-signalling on railways.

The Safety and Engineering category seeks to recognise any innovations designed to make the railway safer, with judges also looking for designs that have delivered significant benefits in enhancing operations or raising productivity.

SSLs award-winning Integr8 signalling is part of an initiative launched by Network Rail to develop low-cost and easy-to-install technology that can be used to re-signal low-density rural routes for UK railway lines. The lightweight signals require no heavy lifting gear in order to install or supporting structures, which contributes to the safety credentials of the system. With all equipment being pre-assembled and pre-tested, there is also no need for extensive line-side testing after installation.

Steve McLaren, Managing Director of Signalling Solutions Ltd said: Our signalling concept can not only offer reduced capital  and operating costs, but it also allows for a significant reduction in line-side equipment which is key to ensuring higher levels of safety on the tracks. Were delighted that our system has been recognised at such a prestigious event.

The Railway Industry Innovation Awards are the longest-established railway awards and celebrate the achievements of operators, infrastructure owners, manufacturers and service providers in both the public and private sectors. Each entry is judged by a panel of industry experts and this years ceremony was attended by Transport Minister, Theresa Villiers MP.

Signalling Solutions employs 333 people in the UK, almost half of which are located in the Midlands with a team of 37 based in Beeston, 40 in Birmingham and 88 in Derby. Alstom Transport employs 2,000 people in the UK, with its headquarters located in Rugby.
