The science and engineering skills of four talented students from Rugby have been showcased at the Engineering Education Schemes (EES) Celebration Day.

The achievements of Jenny Eyre, Eve George, Terri-Anne Faulconbridge and Holly Williams from Rugby High School follows on from their work experience partnership with leading engineering firm Alstom, one of the Midlands largest employers.

As part of the EES initiative, which links engineering companies with talented students to solve live industry problems, the team of local pupils was invited by Alstom to undertake a detailed research study. The prestigious six-month work experience scheme culminated at the EES Celebration Day, where the teams technical, communication and project management skills were assessed by a panel of professional engineers.

The students, mentored by Alstom employees Tim Rice, an engineer in aerodynamics, and Martin Claridge, technical specialist, completed a project on the angle measurement of rotating blade tips. Following an impressive performance in front of the judging panel, the team was then invited to showcase their study in front of an assembled audience of more than 500 people at the EES event. Their performance was also praised by Dr Paul Golby, Chief Executive at E.ON UK, who later delivered a keynote address.

Helena Austin, Human Resources Director at Alstom UK, said: Its so encouraging to see a group of young people with such passion and aptitude for science and engineering - they represent our next generation of experts and were thrilled to see their work celebrated at such a prestigious event.

There is a wealth of young talent in our industry and the EES initiative is important as it allows students to gain in-depth, hands on experience of engineering, design and research at a professional level.

Alstom has also mentored a group of four students from Leicester Grammar School. The team undertook a research project on the feasibility of fluidic seals and gained practical experience working alongside engineers at Alstoms Power site in Rugby.

Alstom is dedicated to ensuring continued improvement and innovation within the industry, with five world-class technical training facilities in the UK specialising in welding, lifting and rigging, steam turbine and generator and transmission technologies. Alstom in Rugby has also had a long association with the EES scheme, providing mentoring to local schools for more than ten years.
