Alstom is the main sponsor of the "Windforce 11" conference of the Windenergy Agency Bremerhaven/Bremen e.V. (WAB) and presents its wind power portfolio from 7 - 9 June in Bremerhaven, Germany.

The growth of the wind farm industry in the past 10 years has created an important new market collector and transmission substations for renewable energies. Alstom Grid is one of the European leaders in the offshore substation domain with a large installed base in the waters off the UK and Germany.

At the conference, Alstom Grid will present the new concept of a self-floating and self-erecting substation platform as a turn-key solution for grid connection of offshore wind farms. "This platform concept saves costs for heavy crane technology offshore. Using a jacket foundation structure minimises the dead weight of steel. The concept will be implemented for the Baltic 2 wind farm in the Baltic Sea", says Uwe Gierer, Alstom Grid's offshore platform specialist.

Furthermore, Alstom Grid offers solutions in the area of onshore wind power. Very recently in mid-May 2011 Europe's largest onshore wind farm in Tariverde, Romania - 400/10 kV 3x250 MVA - was connected to the grid. "The efficient use of renewable energies and their integration into the grids are a core area of our business. With a wide range of products and systems, we are perfectly prepared for the upcoming challenges on the energy business", says Axel Koßmann, Country Sales Director in Germany of Alstom Grid.

To respond to this very specific renewable market, Alstom Grid launched its Voltage Source Converter (VSC) High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology in 2010 to integrate offshore wind into electrical networks. VSC converters can operate in very weak systems or even passive alternative current systems with no sources of generation. This makes them ideal for connecting island loads or black starting systems.

The division of Alstom Power will also present its most recent wind development at Bremerhaven with the new 6 MW offshore wind turbine. The gear-less wind turbine guarantees for high efficiency and is specifically designed for rough use at sea.
