Alstom has successfully delivered the first 812 MW runner the core component of a hydro turbine - to the site of the Xiangjiaba dam currently under construction in China.

With an output of 812 MW per unit, the Xiangjiaba hydropower project has the largest single unit output of any power plant under construction today another indication of Alstoms successful cooperation with China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC) following the successful delivery of 14 hydro generator units and the governing and computer control systems for the Three Gorges Dam.

The runner is one of the largest in the world, weighing in at 406 tonnes with a diameter of 10.5 metres and a height of 4.7 metres, and is part of the contract won by Alstom in 2008 for the supply of four 812 MW Francis turbine and generator units to the Xiangjiaba dam. The contract also includes training, supervision of installation and commissioning

Final welding and machining of the runner was carried out at the Three Gorges Site workshop of Tianjin Alstom Hydro Co. Ltd. (TAH) in Yichang, Hubei Province, 1200 km away.

Xiangjiaba is China's third-largest dam  after the Three Gorges and Xiluodu dams, also operated by CTGPC. It is the fifth largest dam in the world.

The delivery of the first runner to the Xiangjiaba project is a major project milestone which demonstrates Alstoms competence in the design and manufacture of large hydro systems and will ensure the successful commissioning of unit one of the Xiangjiaba hydro power plant in 2012 said Richard Yeung, Head of Alstom Power China.

TAH is Alstoms largest hydro power manufacturing base and has long enjoyed a leading postion in Chinese and other Asian markets. In order to expand TAHs production capacity and meet growing market demand, Alstom inaugurated a new hydro power manufacturing site in November 2010, capable of delivering up to 30 turbine and generator units per year with outputs ranging from 20 MW to 1000 MW.
