Alstom at the POWER-GEN India conference on Gearing up for the Power Challenges of Indias 12th Plan, 5 7 May 2011, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
India, the worlds second most populous country, combines rapidly growing demand with a crippling 12 percent power deficit. This makes the Indian power sector one of the largest business opportunities in the world at present.
Indias current installed capacity is about 164 GW and this needs to go up phenomenally if the country is to continue on its path of economic development. As per the Governments Power for All mission, India would require that the installed generation capacity should be at least 200,000 MW by 2012 from the present level.
Competing and winning in India will require players to tailor their business models to address existing bottlenecks, market inefficiencies and development risk. Indias pace of capacity addition must increase fivefold to tenfold; secure fuel supplies; improve efficiencies; strengthen governance to drive implementation and manage inherent risks. Over and above, India would also have to create solutions to sustain its power supply by adapting green measures.
Ministry of power is working out strategies with focus on low cost generation, optimization of capacity utilization, controlling the input cost, optimization of fuel mix, Technology upgradation and utilization of Non Conventional energy sources to achieve the target of Power for All Indians by 2012. This presents a huge opportunity for the power equipment manufacturer or service provider as India presents the perfect combination of demand and supply.
