Alstom provided updates on its efforts to de-carbonize the generation of electric power during a prominent industry conference in Pittsburgh, PA this week. Alstom officials provided updates on the companys carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology solutions during the 10th Annual CCS Conference, which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
Speaking on a conference panel addressing the future of CCS, Alstoms Tom Stringer, Director of R&D Execution, said the company is pursuing a three-pronged approach to mitigating climate change, including:
- Balancing the power generation portfolio by significantly increasing the share of CO2-free technologies
- Maximizing production efficiency and flexibility for both existing and new plants
- Applying CCS technologies to coal, gas, and oil fired power plants.
Stringer stressed the importance of moving forward with large-scale CCS projects like the one at American Electric Powers Mountaineer Plant in New Haven, WV. He noted that Alstom is developing two main technologies for CO2 capture:
- Post-combustion technologies remove CO2 directly from the flue gas of the power plant using either Chilled Ammonia or Advanced Amine processes; this CO2 is stored deep underground.
- Oxy-combustion solutions utilize oxygen instead of air to combust the fuel, generating a concentrated stream of CO2 which can also be stored.
These technologies are adaptable to existing and new power plants with varying fuel types.
