Tampere 23 May, 2011
Alstom Grid has been awarded a contract with Kemira Chemicals Oy, a subsidiary of the Finnish Kemira Group, to supply a new, turnkey rectifier group at its Äetsä plant in Sastamala, Finland. At the plant, Kemira produces chemicals for water intensive industries and cities, for safer and more economical use of water. The rectifier group will assure the Direct Current (DC) energy supply needed for the electrolysis process used in producing sodium chlorate.
This contract fulfils the customers need to both replace a rectifier substation at end-of-life and increase production capacity going from a power capacity of 7 MVA to 21 MVA. It is the latest contract win in a longstanding relationship between Kemira and Alstom Grids Power Electronics Activities, a leading producer of medium range DC power supplies for electrolysis processes.
Alstom Grid was able to propose a compact system designed not only to accommodate 21 MVA but also to fit within existing space restrictions. At the same time, the solution allows for a fast and seamless switchover of power between different work areas, to reduce production costs. Alstom Grids smart technology will also enable Kemira to identify and sell energy reserves within seconds to local utility companies.
The scope of supply includes a 21 MVA oil-type rectifier transformer with on-load tap-changer (OLTC), a thyristor controlled rectifier, cooling and digital control systems as well as installation and commissioning (without civil works).
Project completion is scheduled for December 2011.
This contract again proves customer trust in Alstom Grids solutions for highly reliable DC substations and, at the same time, is a result of continuous customer relationship originating from both main contracts and revamping activities. We are proud to deliver our solution to one of the world s leading players in sustainable sodium chlorate production. Dr. Wolfgang Krewel, Commercial Manager with Alstom Grids Power Electronics Activities.
As one of the leading water chemistry companies Kemira needs reliable collaborators. Now, with the contract signed, Im convinced that our co-operation will be good and that this project will proceed on schedule. Petri Kopi, Manager of Electricity (Pulp) at Kemiras plant in Sastamala, Finland.
