Jim McIlwrath, Welding Manager at Alstom Power and Danny Broadbent, Welding Apprentice, attended the AWFTE (Association for Welding and Fabrication Training and Education) conference on 1st April at TWI, an organisation for independent research and technology in Cambridge, in order to demonstrate Alstom's commitment to skills development within the industry.
The conference was centred around UK skills competitions, of which Alstom is an active player and particularly in the field of welding. During the day, Jim McIlwrath provided an insightful presentation highlighting an employer's perspective on the importance of these competitions.
In addition, there was a virtual welding competition, hosted by Lincoln Electric. This fantastic innovation is designed to increase welder training amongst other welding related activities. All conference attendees took part in the competition and a maximum score of 100 was achievable. Jim McIlwrath won the competition with a score of 90 out of 100, winning a bottle of 10-year-old malt whisky, presented by AWFTE President David Cleghorn.
