Well before the date for switching the entire Danish network over to the ERTMS* standard, scheduled for 2021, Alstom is acting as a pioneer. The company has already tested a train fitted with a system that complies with the new European signalling standard in Denmark.
It was in the port of Köge, south of Copenhagen, in the presence of the press, clients from Northern European countries and representatives of BaneDanmark, the Danish railway operator, that the experiment was carried out on 6 and 7 April.
The guests were able to see for themselves the effectiveness of the ERTMS level 2** solution proposed by Alstom Transport. Onboard the train, two screens were relaying in real time images from the control panel as well as from the control centre which was coordinating the manoeuvres remotely from Charleroi, in Belgium, where Alstoms signalling centre of excellence is based. Among other things, this set-up showed the high level of safety offered by the solution: for example, moments after the driver had exceeded the speed limit, an emergency braking command issued remotely immediately caused the train to slow down.
* European Rail Traffic Management System ** With the ERTMS level 2 system, the transmission of the data takes place solely by GSM-R wireless communication.
