Alstoms scope worth the equivalent of over 650 million
In a project worth about 1 billion in total, Alstom has signed a power plant contract worth the equivalent over 650 million with TNB Janamanjung Sdn Bhd to provide key power generation equipment to South East Asias first 1000 MW supercritical coal-fired power plant Manjung, Malaysia. The unit will be the single largest one in South East Asia and will produce enough electricity to power nearly 2 million households in Malaysia. The contract is booked in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2011/2012.
Supercritical power plants operate at a higher temperature than regular coal-fired power plants. The high temperature increases the pressure at which they operate, which in turns improves their efficiency, increasing the amount of power output and decreasing emissions per unit of fuel burned.
TNB Janamanjung Sdn Bhd. a subsidiary of Malaysias state-controlled power generation, transmission and distribution company Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), has awarded the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to Alstom and its consortium partner, China Machinery Import and Export Corporation. Under the terms of the contract, Alstom will engineer, procure, construct and commission a 1000 MW steam turbine, a generator, a supercritical boiler and auxiliaries. Alstom will also supply and install its latest ALSPA® Series 6 Distributed Control System, and environmental control systems to cut emissions.
The plant is expected to come online in 2015 providing an extra 1000 MW of power to the Malaysian grid.
The contract follows TNBs 1999 contract with Alstom to build the currently operating 2100 MW Manjung coal-fired power plant. The three 700 MW units, which came into operation in 2004, use Alstoms clean coal combustion technology and Alstoms market leading environmental control systems.
Philippe Joubert, Alstom Power President, highlighted how Alstoms clean power solutions are supporting Malaysias growth, saying: "This deal is yet another step in a long and productive partnership with TNB as we continue in our mutual quest to deliver cheaper, cleaner power to Malaysian consumers and businesses. Our market-leading supercritical technology will reduce emissions from Manjung while providing additional capacity to meet strong demand in one of the world's fastest-growing economies. This contract demonstrates Alstoms successful strategy in Asia enabling us to offer competitive solutions through local industrial set-ups and partnerships.
Alstom is the largest original equipment manufacturer in Malaysia having supplied key equipment for nearly 7.5 gigawatts (GW) of the countrys installed power generation capacity. Previous contracts in Malaysia include turnkey contracts in 1994 for the construction of the 1,300 MW Lumut and the 670 MW Kuala Langat combined-cycle power plants, contracts to provide GT13 gas turbines for the Paka, Pasir Gudang and Connaught Bridge power plants signed in 1989, turnkey contracts in 2000 to build the GB3 and Perlis combined-cycle power plants, as well as the 2003 and 2004 contracts to install environmental control systems for the Tg Bin and Jimah coal-fired power plants. Most recently, Alstom won a contract from TNB for the supply of the electro-mechanical package (consisting of two 125 MW hydro power turbines, a generator and ancillaries) for the 250 MW Hulu Terengganu hydro power plant in 2010.
