Alstom to supply track works for Chennais metro line in India

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has signed with Alstom, in consortium with Larsen & Toubro, a 73 million contract for the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of track-works in corridors I & II for the Chennai Metro. With this latest contract win, Alstom is enlarging its presence in India and presently extends the range of its solutions with signaling, traction, rolling stock and now with infrastructure/track works.
The track work consists of a 105 km track length, including 15 km inside the depot at Koyambedu, and is slated to be completed by the end of 2013 for stage 1 and mid 2015 for stage 2 (tunnel section). Of the total 45km route-length of double track, 24 km is underground track and 21km is elevated track. Corridor I includes the 23 km Washermanpet-airport track, while the 22km corridor II runs from Chennai Central Railway Station to St Thomas Mount.
Alstom was awarded in 2010 its first rolling stock contract in India l by the Chennai Metro Rail for the supply of 168 cars in which the first deliveries of are planned for the end of 2012. As a multi-specialist rail transport solutions supplier, Alstom has previously provided train control and signaling systems for the metro of Delhi and is installing them in the metro of Bangalore.
This new contract confirms that Alstom, as a multi-specialist/multi-geographic company, is well positioned to respond to all opportunities arising from one of the largest railway market in the world By the end of 2012, train passenger numbers in India are expected to increase to 8.4 billion per annum. Indian Railways current five-year plan foresees investments of approximately 39 billion until 2012. Today, forty-five Indian cities are above 1 million inhabitants and more than 10 urban projects are in progress or planned in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Jaipur and Kolkata.

In fulfilling this contract, Alstom will draw upon its expertise in the area of infrastructure. This activity includes electrification of railway lines, track laying, modernization of existing lines and electromechanical systems for new railway lines, tramways and metros. Alstom has already electrified more than 10,000 kilometers and has laid more than 2,000 kilometers of track. The company has been awarded large-scale contracts for Singapore's automatic metro, China's high-speed Shi-Tai line, and the High Speed 1 Paris-London link.

The Government of Tamil Nadu created a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for implementing the Chennai Metro Rail Project. This SPV named as "Chennai Metro Rail Limited" was incorporated on December 2007 under the Companies Act. It has now been converted into a Joint Venture of Government of India and Government of Tamil Nadu with equal equity holding. The Chennai Metro, a public sector enterprise, is implementing a 45 km metro rail project to upscale the citys transport system, with two interconnected lines linking North Chennai to the airport in the South and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount.
