Completes the UAEs largest smelter project with 5.2 million work hours without lost time incident.
Alstom's team working at the Al Taweelah aluminium smelter complex in the UAE has been recognised by the Emirates Aluminium Company (EMAL) as the on-site contractor with the best overall Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) record on the project. The team was also rewarded for achieving 5.2 million work-hours without any 'Lost Time Incidents' (LTI).
EMAL is a joint venture between aluminium producer Dubai Aluminium Company (DUBAL) and Mubadala Development Company (MUBADALA). The new hi-tech aluminium smelter constructed by them in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi is one of the largest industrial projects in the UAE outside the oil and gas sector. In 2007, they signed a contract with Alstom to supply four Gas Treatment Centres*, a new Alfeed** system to feed alumina to all the pots, and two Fume Treatment Centres*** to bring the plant in line with the UAE's stringent environmental standards. The plant reached full production at the end of 2010 and is now on track to produce 750,000 tonnes of aluminum in 2011.
The project was executed by Alstoms team, who has maintained high standards of safety throughout the project execution. Their efforts have been recognised by EMAL through various monthly and quarterly EHS awards and the current award recognising the overall EHS performance further cements their approval of Alstoms performance.
A deep rooted culture of safety first, last, and always has been embedded at EMAL from the initial stages of the project, and today we have honoured Alstom for working with us and sharing our commitment to best-in-class health and safety standards. Alstom excelled by investing heavily in its focus on EHS and safety record, resulting in exceptional achievements in the number of man hours worked without Lost Time Incidents, which was of the utmost importance for the construction of this state-of-the-art project, said Saeed Fadhel Al Mazrooei, President and CEO, EMAL.
Sylvain Hijazi, Country President, Alstom UAE commented, Safety is an important Alstom value that assumes the highest priority in all our project executions. We are indeed proud to receive this award from EMAL, an organisation with very high EHS standards. Our teams have worked very well together to ensure a safe working environment for all our people and contractors on site. Such awards give great visibility to our actions and efforts.
