Patrick Kron, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alstom, pays tribute to Pierre Bilger, who chaired the company between 1991 et 2003. Pierre Bilger passed away in Paris on 4 March 2011.
It was under the chairmanship of Pierre Bilger that Alstom turned from a subsidiary of its founding shareholders, GEC and Alcatel, into an independent company and experienced the international development allowing its leading market positions today. Pierre Bilger involved the company in major acquisitions. If we look beyond the temporary problems often experienced in such operations, we can see that the acquisitions he carried out built the foundations of the large group which Alstom is today », underlined Patrick Kron. Personally speaking, I could rely on his full support when he transmitted the management of the company to me and benefited from his valuable advices to overcome the companys difficulties in 2003 and 2004, he added.
Born in 1940, a former student of the prestigious Ecole Nationale dAdministration and Inspecteur général des Finances, Pierre Bilger joined the Group then named Alsthom in 1987 as Company Secretary and a member of the management board. He became Chief Executive Officer in 1989 and was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GEC-Alsthom in 1991, which then became Alstom in 1998 on its stock market launch.
