Alstom UK Ltd, in conjunction with Drax Power Limited and National Grid, formally lodged an application yesterday (9th February, 2011) with the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) for partial European Union funding for a new stand-alone, 426MW gross, oxy-fired carbon capture and storage (CCS) demonstration project based at Drax's  site at Selby, North Yorkshire.

As part of the project, National Grid, together with an experienced offshore partner will develop a transportation system out to the southern North Sea where the CO2 will be permanently stored.  The project could help support National Grids development of a cluster of CCS projects in the Humber area.

Alstom UKs Country President and Head of Power, Stephen Burgin said: 'Alstom is delighted to confirm its involvement in bidding for EU funds to support the development of this new UK CCS project. Along with our partners Drax Power Limited and National Grid, we believe that this truly world-class project, based on proven oxy-firing technology, has the potential to become a flagship programme which will deliver viable, economic solutions to help decarbonise the UK power market.

Notes to Editors
1. The European Union funding programme is the New Entrant Reserve 300 Scheme (NER-300), which is designed to support CCS and renewable energy projects. The Governments deadline for the first call for proposals was 9 February 2011 and it has until 9 May 2011 to make a decision on the applications to forward to the European Investment Bank for further consideration.
2. The consortium is now in a competitive process with other potential UK and EU projects for this funding and will not be able to comment further until that process is significantly further advanced.
