Luxembourg Railways (CFL) has selected Alstom to install the third and final portion of its fleet with the Atlas ERTMS signalling solution. The contract is worth more than 13 million and covers the installation of 19 locomotives and 22 double-deck electric multiple units (EMUs). CFLs entire fleet, numbering more than 100 trains, will therefore operate with Alstoms ERTMS Level 1 solution.

CFL is a pioneer in its use of the ERTMS signalling system. In 2003, it ordered an initial design and equipment phase involving 10 prototypes. In 2006, CFL selected Alstom to equip 18 EMUs (batch 1) and, in 2008, 20 locomotives and 20 DOSTO driving trailers (batch 2).

The Atlas equipment will be manufactured at Alstoms Charleroi and Villeurbanne sites, then installed on the trains by Alstom teams in CFLs workshops in Luxembourg. The newly equipped trains will come into service from 2012 on the Luxembourg, French and Belgian networks.

Atlas, Alstoms ERTMS solution, leads to more fluid traffic and optimal frequencies while ensuring passenger safety. It provides excellent interoperability throughout the European network and boosts railway profitability.

In Spain, Alstom has equipped the majority of the trains which circulate with ERTMS. With 36% of market share, Alstom has installed this technology in 239 trains, such as the modern Civia units, or the high speed train and the Lanzaderas which circulate on the Madrid Seville line.

About Atlas, Alstom Transports ERTMS solution:
This new contract strengthens Alstom Transports position as the leader in the operational deployment of rail interoperability in Europe. Alstom holds a 63% market share in ERTMS Level 2-compatible onboard equipment contracts. Atlas has proven its worth on over 1,100 trains throughout more than 40 million km of commercial service. In Europe, over 8 out of 10 trains operating under ETCS Level 2 are using the Atlas solution. Alstom has carried out more than 30 ERTMS projects in nine European countries, including the Rome-Naples line in Italy, the first very high speed line equipped with an ERTMS Level 2 system; the Mattstetten-Rothrist line in Switzerland, used by the largest equipped fleet; and the Betuwe Route freight line in the Netherlands, which is part of Corridor C.
Moreover, over 1,300 trainsets equipped with the Atlas solution will come into service over the next few years.
