During the first nine months of 2009/10 (from 1 April to 31 December 2009), the level of orders booked by Alstom reached AUD 17.6 billion. Sales, at AUD 22.3 billion, continued to grow, up by 6% as compared to the same period of last year.

Alstom and Schneider Electric signed today the agreement with Areva for the acquisition of Areva T&D, its transmission and distribution business. This agreement comes as a result of the exclusive negotiations that started on November 30, 2009 and after the completion of the consultation of the relevant employee representatives.

On 23 March Alstom participated in the Electricity Generation to 2050 Symposium, organised by Delta Electricity and held at the University of Sydney. The event focussed on the major challenges that Australia's energy industry is facing and what needs to be done to meet these challenges.

Between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010, driven by the quality of its backlog, Alstom registered record sales (AUD 28.2 billion) and income from operations (AUD 2.5 billion), up respectively by 5% and 16% over the previous year.

Alstom today announced it is investing up to $55 million in BrightSource Energy Inc., with an equity stake that positions Alstom as one of the main shareholders in the company. This operation takes place as part of a capital increase of $150 million organised by BrightSource. This privately-owned company is a specialist in designing, building and operating tower based solar thermal power plants with operations in the USA, Israel and Australia.

By its acquisition on 7 June 2010 of Areva T&Ds transmission business, Alstom completes a decisive stage in its development by forming a new sector, named Alstom Grid, to supplement the existing two sectors in power generation and rail transport, Power and Transport. Priced at 2.3 billion (AUD 3.36 bn), this acquisition gives a new dimension to the Alstom Group, which, now with its three sectors, achieves sales of more than 23 billion (AUD 33.6 bn) and employs more than 96,000 people.

On 24 June 2010, Alstom inaugurated a new production facility for steam turbines, gas turbines, large turbo-generators and related equipment for the North American fossil fuel and nuclear power generation market.

Alstom has signed a contract worth AUD 144 million with the Brazilian renewable power generating company, Desenvix, subsidiary of the Engevix engineering group, to build a 90 MW wind farm complex in Bahia, Brazil. With the working name of Brotas, the complex will consist of three wind farms - Macaubas, Novo Horizonte and Seabra - and represents Alstoms first contract in the Brazilian wind market. This contract has been booked in 1st quarter FY 2010/11.

During the first quarter of 2010/11 (from 1 April to 30 June 2010), orders booked by Alstom amounted to AUD4.5 billion. Sales, at AUD6.9 billion, were slightly down as compared to the same period of last year.

On a cold winters day, Alstom President AU & NZ, Chris Raine joined Victorian Industry and Trade Minister Jacinta Allan when she visited the UGL Rail factory in Ballarat to mark the start of work on 19 new Xtrapolis trains for the Melbourne Metropolitan network.

More than 430 Alstom employees worked around the clock, from April 9 to July 13, to complete the inspection and maintenance of a 220MW coal-fired unit at the Hazelwood Power Station that was built in the 1960s.
