Energy leaders from around the world recently gathered in Montreal, Canada for the 21st World Energy Congress where delegates from 94 countries discussed the global challenge of increasing energy production while cutting CO2 emissions and protecting the environment.

Solutions for an energy-efficient future.

Several Alstom executives, including Chairman and CEO Patrick Kron, participated in WEC and emphasized the companys 3-part Clean Power Today strategy, which focuses on:

  • A balanced energy portfolio for new generation including renewable sources such as hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and others
  • Increasing the efficiency of existing power plants to lower CO2 emissions
  • Adopting Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology to reduce CO2 emissions from new and existing power plants that use fossil fuels

Smarter Power: New Systems Architectures For Improved Power Generation Automation And Fleet Management In The Smart Grid Context

Smart grids will play an important role in helping the power sector meet the challenges of the future. They will be required to accommodate the increase in intermittent renewable energy. At the same time, power plant operators will have to change the way in which they operate in order to reduce emissions; improve efficiency while offering more ramping capabilities to the system.

Alstom Power and Microsoft joined forces to launch a new Reference Utility Architecture bringing significant benefits to utilities to reduce their IT TCO while significantly increasing the richness of critical applications to optimise plant dispatch and maintenance decisions.
