Safety is top priority for the Boiler Field Service team at Enfield Power Station, an accomplishment recently recognised by customer E.ON UK, who have presented five separate awards to the team.

The Boiler team has been working on the replacement of the Main Stop Valve, Attemporator and OCD works during the Enfield outage, taking place between 25th June to 9th August 2010. In addition work has been undertaken in top and bottom dead spaces working in confined spaces.  From the start of the outage, safety has been no.1 for the whole Alstom team.

On 24th July, the whole Boiler team were awarded the Safety, Health and Environmental (S.H.E) Team of the Week award for several admirable behaviours; 'proactively managing safety in restricted areas which have higher than average levels of associated risk, putting forward numerous safety initiatives and near hit reports and undertaking regular incident briefings and toolbox talks'.  The following week, a further S.H.E Team of the Week award was won by the Alstom rigging team, who have been noticed proactively managing lifting and lifting areas in an extremely safe manner.

David Grogan, Grinder, won £50 for suggesting a safety idea regarding confined space entry. Davids idea was for a double tagging system which involves logging in with the guardian recording the name on the entry board and then taking the identification pass of the entrant as a back up.  In addition, on 13th July, the CEO of E.ON Spain visited Enfield to carry out a site audit. During his safety walk, he stopped in the area of the de-super heater and observed that riggers Nigel Ingall and Richard McDermott had rigged a storage area to hang their chain blocks and slings neatly adjacent to the work area.  He asked that the two riggers efforts be recognised and that E.ON award them a meal voucher for their efforts.

Nigel Ingall also won the prestigious E.ON Red t-shirt award which recognised his persistence in bringing a faulty floor grating to the attention of the safety team.  Nigel expressed his concerns continuously and also offered a potential solution.  The safety team were impressed that Nigel was not prepared to let the issue rest due to the serious nature of the problem.  Furthermore, John Mortimore, Site Manager, has also been awarded the 'Red t-shirt award' for spotting a loose nut on a pipe hanger that could have caused serious injury if left untightened.  John tightened the nut himself before reporting the defect.
