Prime Minister welcomes added renewable capacity and increase in energy security.

Alstom, the world leader in the supply of hydropower equipment and services, and Sanko, the Turkish industrial holding, today inaugurated the 100 MW Cevizlik hydropower plant. Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoan, carried out the official inauguration ceremony.

The new plant will generate sufficient power to provide electricity to around 200,000 homes, or a city with a population the size of neighbouring Rize, Mr. Erdoans hometown.

In 2006, Sanko awarded Alstom the contract for the turnkey supply and commissioning of Cevizliks two 51.2 MW Francis turbines and two 56 MVA generators, as well as all auxiliary equipment. Final tests reveal that Alstom has exceeded expectations with a power output that is 10% higher than the agreed contractual values.

Hundreds of guests from across Turkey and Europe attended the ceremony hosted by Mr. Abdulkadir Konukolu, Sanko Chairman. Senior representatives from Alstom included Adil Tekin, Head of Power, Alstom Turkey. After the official welcome and opening speeches, guests went on to tour the new plant, which provides Sanko with the latest in hydropower generation technology.

The facility is part of Sankos programme to build additional renewable energy capacity, in line with the governments push to improve Turkeys energy security by increasing the share of renewable energy. The government has called for the mobilization of local power generation to reduce Turkeys dependence on imported fuels, which currently account for 60% of the countrys power generation.

Hydro has grown by around 13% over the last 5 years in Turkey, which currently has approximately 15 GW of installed hydropower capacity. Alstom is Turkeys leading hydropower equipment provider and boasts more than 50% of the countrys hydro generator market share.

Cevizlik will provide Turkeys national power grid with 100 MW of locally produced, renewable energy. As a leader in clean power solutions, we are proud to have been chosen by Sanko and thereby contribute to Turkeys energy security through the development of hydro capacity, said Adil Tekin, Head of Power, Alstom Turkey.

Mr. Konukolu, at Sanko said: We have gone to great lengths to source the best technology for our new power plant projects. We believe Alstoms leading hydropower offering will help Sanko deliver clean, reliable and efficient power to customers in Turkey.

Alstom hydro references in Turkey include the 672 MW Birecik hydropower plant and the 1,800 MW Karakaya plant. Alstom has hydro projects under construction totalling 2,000 MW, including the 600 MW Deriner plant and the 417 MW Kavsakbendi-Kopru-Menge plant. In March 2008, Sanko contracted Alstom for the turnkey supply and commissioning of turbines, generators and all auxiliary equipment for the 320 MW Sanibey-Yedigoze hydropower plant, expected to come online later this year.

Overall, Alstom has provided key equipment for 55% of Turkeys installed capacity. References, spanning a wide range of fuels, include the 320 MW Can lignite-fired power plant, the Afsin Elbistan A 1,340 MW coal-fired power plant, as well as the 1,120 MW Hamitabat and 480 MW Unimar combined cycle plants.
