Alstoms gas turbine community was much in evidence at the ASME Turbo 2010 turbine technical conference and exhibition, speaking on panels and presenting over 25 papers at the global technology event held from 14th - 18th June in Glasgow.  The event brings together over 3,000 turbo machinery experts from around the world the biggest gathering of R&D people on the subject of gas turbines for land, sea and air. This year, for the first time, there was also a track on steam and wind turbines.

Forty people from Alstom took part, supporting the conference by providing ten session chairs and six session co-chairs and taking part in panel discussions covering steam turbines, gas turbine combustion, CO2 capture and storage and gas turbines.  Alstoms participation was mainly to promote our profile as a leading technology company, to the experts and students present.
To support the conference, Power also launched a message in a bottle by sponsoring water stations at the event and providing SIGG reuseable drinking water bottles to each delegate.  The sponsorship was designed to encourage people to use the water station rather than purchasing water bottles, hence reducing unnecessary waste.

Alstom were part of the Local Liaison Committee for the event and in conjunction with British Energy, part of EDF Energy, arranged a site visit to Torness Nuclear Power Station located 30 miles east of Edinburgh.  Twenty-one people signed up for the tour from ten different countries.  The tour began with lunch followed by an introductory talk on the plant.
Visitors were then taken on a guided tour led by John Miller, Projects Manager and Mick Starr, Steam and Rotating Group Head and shown the plants control room, reactor hall, maintenance area and turbine hall.  The power station, commissioned in 1988, consists of two Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGR) capable of producing a peak rating of 1364 MWe and is powered by 2x685 MW GEC steam turbines operating at a speed of 3000 RPM.  The very informative visit proved a huge success with everyone judging by the many questions asked. In the words of one delighted guest ...it was an unforgettable experience.
