Alstom-Transmashholding consortium and Kazakh Railways lay
first stone of their future electric locomotive site in
Astana

This event is part of the tripartite agreement signed 19
June in Saint Petersburg. The agreement covers the creation of
a joint venture, held equally by KTZ and the Alstom-TMH
consortium, for the manufacture of electric passenger and
freight locomotives in Kazakhstan.

The electric locomotive site will be built in Astana, the
capital of Kazakhstan, to leverage synergies with the diesel
locomotive manufacturing site of AO Lokomotiv, a KTZ subsidiary
and partner of General Electric that is already present in the
city. The feasibility study carried out by Alstom and TMH
showed that this choice would make it possible to achieve
significant economies of scale (pooling of staff, use of the
same network of suppliers etc.) with a view to building a true
rail sector in Kazakhstan.

This new site will be constructed by Kazakh Railways, with
completion slated for 2012 to handle the transfer of the
assembly and then the manufacture of the first locomotives on
site. The Alstom-TMH consortium will supply all of the
equipment and tools needed to set up a production line with an
annual capacity of up to 50 to 80 locomotives. These double
BoBo locomotives will incorporate Alstom technology in
particular, the traction system as well as a number of
other components to be manufactured by the future Alstom-TMH
joint venture in Russia. The first locomotives could be
delivered as early as 2012 from Alstoms Belfort factory.

Alstom and TMH will also undertake to train the staff who will
work at the future Kazakh factory at their own locomotive
competence centres in Belfort (France) and Novotcherkassk
(Russia). This new Kazakh manufacturing site is likely to
become the jewel of a modern rail industry in Kazakhstan.
