Z2 regional trains got a facelift

The goal of this modernization of the 75 trainsets was the
installation of a climate-control system (heating and
air-conditioning). The main technical challenge was to minimize
the dimensions in the cars to accommodate the air-conditioning
system. The project also included the reconditioning of the
interior fittings and layout, in particular to improve access
for the disabled.

While 8 trainsets were assembled by STP and 67 by SNCF, Alstom
supplied the renovation kits, which were set up in
Saint-Pierre-des-Corps near the SNCF site that handles the
assembly. To date, 61 Z2 modernized trainsets are in commercial
service.

Alstom and the modernization market


In France, Alstom recently completed its modernization of the
VAL, Lille’s automatic metro. The company is currently
improving the comfort of the MI79 suburban electric
multiple-units belonging to the RATP and the SNCF (execution of
studies and supply of renovation kits for 119 trainsets) and is
also participating in the set-up of wi-fi on 52 TGV-Est
trainsets. Alstom has also won contracts at international level
– for example to renovate the metros in Mexico City,
Caracas and Cairo.
