The upgrading of this section from conventional to ERTMS
Level 1 signalling is part of the plan ADIF has put in place to
modernize the freight corridor between France,
Figueres-Perpignan and the Port of Barcelona. This section will
also be equipped with a third rail to create a dual-gauge
track. This system will allow trains to operate on both tracks,
Spanish tracks with a wider gauge (1,668 mm) and UIC-compliant
French tracks with a narrower gauge (1,435 mm) without changing
rails.

Bringing this section into compliance with European standards
will facilitate cross-border transport between France and
Spain. Alstom will equip the line with its Level 1 Atlas 100
ERTMS signalling solution, with Smartlock electronic
interlocking system and the communications system. This
equipment will guarantee a high level of interoperability,
safety and optimized travel time.

This new contract strengthens Alstom Transports position
as the leader in the operational deployment of interoperability
in Europe with over 900 trains equipped with Atlas solution and
around 30 million kilometres travelled in commercial service.
More than 7 trains out of 10 are running every day across
Europe under Atlas supervision.

Currently, Alstom has more than 20 ERTMS projects in service in
nine European countries, including the Rome-Naples line in
Italy, the first very high speed line equipped with a Level 2
ERTMS system, the Mattstetten-Rothrist line in Switzerland,
used by the biggest equipped fleet and the freight line Betuwe
Route in the Netherlands, part of Corridor C. Furthermore, over
1300 vehicles will enter in service with Atlas solution in the
next years.
