Bangalore 26th February 2010: Alstom Foundation today announced the launch of its development programme in India, to Support the Local Community and Preserve Environment for disadvantaged children in rural India. Located in Chamrajanagar district of Karnataka, it is one of the first multi-dimensional projects in India, serving the dual purpose of environmental responsibility and social responsibility. Dedicated to 40 disadvantaged girls, the project aims to educate, rehabilitate and socially integrate the orphan girls by providing them a home facility followed up by self-reliant vocational skills.

On the occasion, Mr. Sunand Sharma, Country President, Alstom India, said, The project Green Orphanage is in sync with Alstom Foundations ambition to become a key contributor to sustainable development around the world. We are keen to initiate projects that successfully combine economic development, social progress and environmental protection. Moreover, we are committed to reinforce our active role in supporting local programmes related to environmental protection. Thanks to this approach, we aim to reconcile preservation of the environment and support local communities.

The project will feature an environmentally friendly infrastructure made from recycled carbon-fly-ash-bricks. In addition to this it harnesses rainwater, promotes recycling of organic waste and uses solar energy for electric power. This project also provides safe drinking water and sanitation for the greater community. With this unique project, Alstom Foundation plans to make the children find a path to environmentally responsible self-sustenance. Alstom Foundation has launched this initiative in association with Asha for Education, which will get the project executed locally by the Deenabandhu Trust.
