Transmission and Distribution: Inauguration of the Macarthur ecological substation in the Sydney region

Alstom Grid and their customer TransGrid, a leading Australian transmission utility company, inaugurated the Macarthur Substation today in the presence of Ms. Lylea Anne McMahon, MP.

The main purpose of the substation was to increase the power supply in the South Western part of Sydney in the Macarthur and Campbelltown areas of New South Wales. In addition to sound substation design catering to stringent mine subsidence require-ments, Alstom Grid was also responsible for protecting a variety of existing infrastructure, managing multiple external stakeholders and protecting sensitive environmental areas.

Notably, the substation is located in close proximity to the Mount Annan Botanical Gardens, Cumberland Plain Woodland, heritage listed buildings, heritage listed Glenlee House, a number of Aboriginal sites, Sydney Water mains pipelines, and a number of critical infrastructure services. It is also prone to mine subsidence as a result of future mining in this area.

Maurice Dres, Vice President Systems Business Unit for Asia-Pacific, said: The Macar-thur substation was a complex project due to the number and variety of constraints and stakeholders involved. Thanks to the quality of our partnership with TransGrid and our project management and engineering expertise, we were able to meet all the challenges and to deliver a quality substation on-time to our customer.
